Stockholm is facing development on an unprecedented scale – one that some observers believe will far exceed even Sweden’s Million Programme housing initiative.

As the city and wider region grow, become denser and expand into new areas, increasing demands will be placed on a robust and efficient water and wastewater system that also meets modern requirements for resilience and sustainability. Major investment in water infrastructure will be needed for new development projects, while the renewal of existing pipe networks must continue in parallel. Innovation and emerging technologies, not least AI, will therefore play a vital role in driving progress and making processes more efficient.

Sweden Water Expo is a new regional meeting place that brings the water and wastewater sector together, with the aim of strengthening knowledge exchange and collaboration between clients and suppliers. The importance of water and wastewater infrastructure to a rapidly growing Stockholm will be explored in a panel discussion on the event stage on Wednesday 16 September. The session will also mark the official opening of Sweden Water Expo 2026.
