The first edition of Sweden Water Expo brought together visitors, exhibiting companies and exhibitor representatives at Stockholmsmässan on 16–17 September. Over two days, the future of water and wastewater services took centre stage as professionals from across the sector came together to exchange knowledge, make new connections and discuss the industry’s challenges and opportunities.

Sweden Water Expo has been developed as a regional meeting place for the water and wastewater sector, with Stockholm and the Mälardalen region at its heart. The region faces substantial investment needs in water and wastewater infrastructure, alongside increasing demands for sustainability, safety and a resilient water supply.

The event welcomed representatives from municipalities and municipal water and wastewater companies, contractors, consultants, suppliers, industry and academia. Attendees included water and wastewater engineers, operations technicians, project managers, technical managers and heads of water and wastewater services.

“The inaugural event has given us valuable experience and a solid foundation to build on. It has been wonderful to see the commitment of exhibitors, partners and visitors, as well as the many meetings and discussions that have taken place over these two days. We will now take these experiences forward as we prepare for Sweden Water Expo 2028,” says Lena Malm, Head of Built Environment at Stockholmsmässan.

From robust water and wastewater infrastructure to AI

The programme was built around four main themes: Water and Wastewater Infrastructure, Wastewater and the Environment, Safety and Preparedness, and Digitalisation and AI.Throughout the event, discussions covered drinking water, pipe networks, climate adaptation, emergency preparedness, new technology and digitalisation.

The opening panel, focusing on the role of water and wastewater systems as Stockholm grows, brought together Pär Dalhielm, CEO of Svenskt Vatten (the Swedish Water and Wastewater Association), Christian Rockberger, CEO of Stockholm Vatten och Avfall, and Charlotte Persson, Head of Planning at the City Planning Administration, City of Stockholm.The discussion explored how water and wastewater systems need to evolve as Stockholm grows and how to ensure a resilient and sustainable water and wastewater supply in the long term.

On the exhibition floor, exhibitors showcased technology, products and services ranging from pipe networks and water treatment to digital solutions and emergency preparedness. Industry organisations and networks, including SSTT, 4S and WIN Water, contributed to the programme and activities alongside exhibitors, speakers and partners.

Looking ahead to 2028

Preparations for the next edition are already under way. Sweden Water Expo will return to Stockholmsmässan on 27–28 September 2028.
The ambition is to build on the inaugural event, further develop the programme in collaboration with industry stakeholders and create even more opportunities for knowledge sharing, networking and new partnerships across the water and wastewater sector.
