How can leaks in water networks be located without excavation or taking pipes out of service? At Sweden Water Expo, 4S Ledningsnät will present a pilot project testing the use of remotely operated vehicle (ROV) technology to inspect pipes while they remain in operation.

Visitors will see footage from the trials, examples of inspections and insights gained from the project so far. Where possible, the equipment itself will also be on display.

“Above all, we want to demonstrate how ROV technology can create new opportunities for safer and more efficient leak detection. We want to show its practical value from both a technical and an operational perspective,” says Johan Wallberg, Chair of 4S Ledningsnät.

Inspection without excavation

One of the main benefits of the technology is that inspections can be carried out inside a pipe while it remains in service. This reduces the need for extensive work on site and means that the pipe does not have to be drained or excavated.

ROV technology can also provide a clearer, more visual picture of the condition of the pipe. This can make it easier to identify defects and potential leaks, while providing better information for deciding which measures are needed.

Trials taking place in week 27

The project has now reached the stage where trials will be carried out during week 27. The aim is to assess how effectively the technology can identify defects and potential leaks within water networks.

During the seminar, 4S Ledningsnät will share the results and lessons learned from the trials. Participants will also gain an insight into how the method could be used in practice and the opportunities it may offer water network operators.

Better information for better decisions

In the longer term, the hope is that the technology will make it easier to take a more preventive approach to managing water networks.

With better information about the condition of their pipes, network operators can prioritise the right measures, reduce water losses and extend the service life of their infrastructure.
